There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall gaming is not legal. Eight gambling dens are established in a generally small location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a prime area, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a few controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; still, financial sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 17:00, and although visas are allegedly required to pass, there are ways around this, as is real of many borders.

The 1st Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship casino, contains one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 table games. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machine games and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel complex that features numerous luxuries in addition to the gambling den, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and 88 gaming tables.
